Summer Class Registration Near

Grab that baby and get in shape this summer with classes at Upper Noe Recreation Center specifically designed for parents with children who don’t yet crawl (or walk).

On Tuesday evenings it’s Baby and Me Yoga, where parents yearning for some Downward Dog won’t have to worry that baby’s cries will interrupt someone’s meditation. On Thursday mornings, a pack of stroller-wielding parents will walk and jog through Noe Valley with the Strollercise class.

Neighborhood demand is strong for programs that target both parent and child, said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen. At the same time, the center continues to offer plenty for the preschool set.

New this term will be Baby and Me for children ages 18 to 36 months on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and for children ages 3-5 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

“The teacher will use her best creative outlets for the little ones to explore their environment,” said Woltjen. Think bubbles, parachutes, circle time and games.

The class, which combines facets of last term’s Tot Space and Tot Gym, requires parents, caregivers or grandparents to help the little ones dance, stretch and create.

The site has also added another Karate Kidz class to meet demand among 4- to 5-year-olds.

The Recreation and Parks Department will also host a free summer baseball league, sponsored by the San Francisco Giants. Upper Noe will have two Junior Giants teams for 5- to 7-year-olds and two for 8- to 10-year-olds. Practices are one day a week and games are on Saturdays. Junior Giants get to enjoy equipment provided by the San Francisco Giants, including a pitching machine and uniforms.

Summer camp at Upper Noe finishes at 3 p.m., meaning some class times have changed. Some classes—like Senior Tango and Tween Theater—-have been suspended until fall, Woltjen said.

Please see our website or www.sfreconline.com for specific times and dates. Registration begins May 12. You can register online or in person at the recreation center.

To register online, you will need a free family account (find out how to get one here), or you can sign up for a family account when you enroll in classes at the recreation center itself.

Movie Night, Take Two

The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center and the Community Recreation Council have come together again to host Movie Night on Saturday, June 16. The evening will start with a ribbon cutting for the site’s new sandbox cover at 4 p.m.

The popcorn machine will be popping by the time cartoons start at 4:30 p.m. A half hour intermission ending at 5:30 p.m. precedes the evening’s PG-rated feature, Sita Sings the Blues.

This animated family movie, rated PG, was made in Noe Valley, and the neighborhood is prominently featured.

The event is free. Children are encouraged to bring pillows and sleeping bags to get comfortable, and their will be folded chairs as well. Come join us for some summer fun!

The Recreation and Parks Department’s interns from San Francisco State University have been organizing events at recreation centers across the city.

At Upper Noe last month, the interns set up an evening of free swing and lindy hop lessons as well as a benefit for Camp Azure, the department’s day camp for children with autism.

Keep an eye for upcoming events on our Community Calendar.

Circus Finelli Takes the Sea by Storm

Catch the antics of four inept sailors storming the high seas when Circus Finelli previews its latest show “Over the Waves” at Upper Noe Recreation Center Saturday, May 12, from 9 to 11 a.m.

“Most of our shows have fallen into the theme of a circus going wrong, so this one’s a little different,” said Luz Gaxiola.

“This takes you to another place.”

Gaxiola and troupe-mates Mahsa Matin, Verka Zaskodna and Molly Shannon always include miming, acrobatics, juggling and music on unusual instruments into their shows. They interact with the audience as well.

Though the May concert will happen at the usual time, please note that starting in June, the summer Tot Concerts will happen in the afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m. to make way for a morning Zumba class.

Tot Rock is sponsored by the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center through community donations. All families with children under the age of 5 welcome.

Changes to Sanchez Street Side Proposed

Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center are applying for a city grant to turn the Sanchez Street side of the building into a more useful space that can accommodate classes and quiet time.

Plans call for a level ground and added greenery on the patio outside the main Sanchez Street doors

The patio outside the kitchen would be extended toward Day Street and include tables and seating. The garden sloping down from the street toward the building would be terraced and sown with Californa native plants and food. The new space will serve as an outdoor classroom, linking food grown in the garden with meals cooked in the kitchen.

The hope is to create a better flow between the two patios as well. Overall, the area would be flexible enough for other uses, including outdoor art for the site’s summer camps.

We want to hear from you! If you have ideas or comments, please email info@noevalleyreccenter.com and let us know. Applications to the grant, known as the Community Opportunity Fund, are due in June.

Euca-clipped-us

Wondering what happened to those Eucalyptus trees that hung down between the tennis court and the playground?

“The lights were burned out, and to get to the lights, the trees needed to be cut back,” said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen. “We had to clear it enough so we don’t have to do it every year.”

The pruning team told Woltjen to expect green leaves to reappear in six months, she said.

Looking at the bright side, the dog park now has a much better view of hillside west of the center, said Chris Faust, a Joby’s Dog Run regular.

LadyBugs Break for Summer

The LadyBug Gardeners will break in May and June unless someone can volunteer to supervise a second Saturday crew in the absence of lead LadyBug Joan Lionberger.

“You have to work with a (city) gardener, and the gardener won’t come unless there is a supervisor,” she said, adding that she is hopeful a neighbor can step into the role.

The supervisor arrives at 9 a.m. to get a list of tasks from the gardener, then assigns those to the volunteers. The work ends at noon.

Lionberger added that green thumbs are welcome to drop by the center on Wednesdays to work with the gardener during his regularly scheduled shift.

Signs of spring are evident on the center’s grounds, with iris, hibiscus and the new native plants along Sanchez Street in full bloom.

Lionberger worries that weeds will soon have their way if there aren’t more gardening volunteers, though.

“It’s just the old faithful who show up,” she said. More neighborhood help is needed, and as always, families with children are encouraged to grab a trowel and get grubby for a good cause!

To volunteer in any capacity or learn more, please email info@noevalleyreccenter.com.

• Serve as a greeter for the free concerts. The Friends of Noe Valley Rec Center need a “friend” to help us greet families during our monthly free concert. Let them know about our mailing list and introduce them to our small group. Our greeters hand out flyers and accept donations for the concert series. The next opportunity will be May 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Even volunteering for one hour would make a big difference!

• Help advise the city on what classes should be offered at the Upper Noe Rec Center. Serve a term on the Upper Noe Recreation Center’s Community Recreation Council and help shape programming at the Center. A teen member is still needed! Please contact Cheryl Woltjen at 970-8061. The form is available on our website and at the center. Please either drop it off or mail it to: Cheryl Woltjen, UNRC, 295 Day Street, SF, 94131.

• Distribute our new Friends of NVRC postcard. This newsletter is distributed to nearly 1,000 “friends.” Make sure interested neighbors know about our group by helping distribute our informational postcard around the neighborhood. Please email molly (at) noevalleyreccenter.com if you know of a good shop or cafe to distribute the postcards. Or you could help put them somewhere frequented by park users.

• Lead a new event. Are you interested in organizing a new event at the Center? Maybe a game night or movie night? Please let us know.

This year’s tour features nine gardens located across the neighborhood. Three were created by professional designers—Janet Moyer Landscaping, Michele Schaal, and Shape of the Earth—and six were created by their owners. The Moyer-designed garden is recently installed and gives a sense of what an urban paradise looks like in its infancy.

LadyBug Gardeners Desperately Needed

The LadyBug Gardeners need two volunteers who can commit to joining them on a regular basis once a month.

The LadyBugs are crucial to the landscape of the park: Budget cuts have forced the parks department to slash the number of “gardener hours” at our facility. The gardener does not have enough hours to maintain all the beds and park areas. Maintenance of the baseball field absorbs much of the gardener’s time, so other areas are lower priorities. If we do not have a volunteer program, our park will not be as clean and well-kept.

Volunteer gardening programs require the supervision of a department gardener; in turn the department requires us to have a regular handful of volunteers to justify the expense.

The regular work day is the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.

With guidance from lead LadyBug Joan Lionberger (pictured) volunteer gardeners help weed and clean the beds. If you can make this monthly commitment, please email kate@noevalleyreccenter.com.

Building a Community Recreation Council

Many people have suggestions or complaints about their neighborhood parks, but few know that they can be the change they want to see.

This summer marks the second anniversary of the Department of Recreation and Parks massive reorganization, and one of its most visible additions has been Community Recreation Councils.

The idea is to have a council comprised of staff and neighbors at each center. Each group’s role is to shape programming, address site issues and spread the word in the community about what’s going on at the local rec center.

“The CRC is the best initiative yet by Rec and Park to bring local community into the decision-making process,” said Upper Noe CRC member Chris Faust. “I’ve never seen anything like this so far.”

Faust has represented Joby’s Dog Run for Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center for about five years. He joined the CRC when it formed in November of 2011.

The staff on Upper Noe’s council includes Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen and Program Coordinator Levi Johnson. Both have worked for the department for a combined 23 years, and they know the ins and outs of programming, facility maintenance and Rec and Park priorities.

“These are things we wouldn’t know as a community,” Faust said.

The citizens on the committee have a pulse on neighborhood needs and so bring information the department staff might not know, Faust said. His neighbors will mention they want more yoga or Zumba, and he can tell them what is happening now and what will be scheduled for the future. He also encourages them to sign up: classes are cancelled if enrollment is low.

In fact, four classes at Upper Noe may need to fold due to underenrollment, said Woltjen. All are classes on Friday: the youth and adult theater classes, the youth cooking class and Express It, a toddler arts class that can include theater, dance, art and poetry.

Though Faust and CRC member Kate Haug have both been active with Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center for the past five years, the council also includes three members—Richard Hildreth, Alison Muir and Karen Spira—who bring fresh ideas and new ways of solving problems to the table. It was Muir who facilitated the March movie night and Spira who found a solution to the sandbox problem. Hildreth lines up Tot Rock music and arranges all audio and visual needs. Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center’s Kate Haug would like to see more members, too.

“I believe it would be beneficial for parents who are PTA members at schools near rec centers to join the CRCs to help make a bridge between school programs and Recreation and Parks programs,” she said.

A quick survey of nearby recreation centers revealed that not one had its CRC running. Bernal Heights was operating briefly, said Facility Coordinator Atajinae Jarreau, but it has stopped for lack of participation.

“We’re recruiting people,” she said.

Oskar Rosas of Glen Park Recreation Center is recruiting, too, he said.

Upper Noe’s CRC meets once a month, and it’s actually quite fun, Faust said. “This is not your typical stodgy committee,” he said. See our newsletters and website for more information.

Bay to Boulders Roll into Upper Noe

They use pseudonyms, they wear costumes, they morph into other bands, but Bay to Boulders is the real deal when it comes to Americana music, and they’ll be showing it all Saturday, April 14, from 9 to 11 a.m. at this month’s tot concert.

Having played at the Noe Valley Farmer’s Market, the band has some idea of how children enjoy their music, said Eric Jonasson, who plays Dobro guitar for the trio.

“A lot of them come up and stare at us,” he said. “I think we’re fun for them to look at, and that’s their first reaction.”

And why not? With banjo player Alle Emershaw (Owly Mae) dressed like a hillbilly Mary Poppins, accordian player Naomi Husaruk (Cat Balou) wearing a square dancing skirt, and Jonaason (Jon Eric) in a bold western shirt, the three make quite an impression.

Their sound—an acoustic three-part harmony—falls into that category of old-time music, and they play mostly traditional songs. Still, they are working on original songs in the same style and may play one or two in April, Jonasson said.

The three met in Southern California’s Joshua Tree, where Husarek and Jonasson have one getaway home and Emershaw has another. Not only did they realize they shared a love of music, they also all had a home base in the Bay Area. Now, two years later, they continue to travel back and forth between the boulder-strewn national park and the Bay Area. Hence the name of the band.

They have two other incarnations. In Steer the Stars, they play only original music using instruments ranging from guitar to laptop loops. In Thee Olde Company, they stick to traditional Country Western music a la Waylon Jennings.

“There’s a lot of drinking and heartbreak,” he said.

As Bay to Boulders, the band plays around the city, sometimes busking, sometimes at the food truck farmer’s market called Off the Grid and also at small venues like El Rio.

“We’ve had a really positive reaction so far,” Jonasson said.

Tot Rock is sponsored by The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center through community donations. All families with children under the age of 5 welcome.

Theater Games Need Players

Upper Noe’s Friday afternoon theater class for tweens, “So You Think You Can Act,” is so short of enrolled students that the center may be forced to cancel it, said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen.

Woltjen is trying to make the class a drop-in option, but she hopes more children will enroll now to keep the program going.

“It’s more than just skits,” she said. “The teacher is really amazing.”

Students learn the fundamentals of acting and storytelling through theater games and a collaborative group project that brings to life a classic story. More than simply theater, the class teaches students to work collaboratively and support each other.

Though the printed age range for participants is 6 to 10, there is room to enroll interested children who are older or slightly younger, Woltjen said.

Earlier this season, the center had to drop Taster’s Choice, the Saturday girls’ sports buffet for tweens. Woltjen hopes So You Think You Can Act will avoid the same fate.

Pre-Ballet Camp for Tots at Harvey Milk

Looking for a nearby tot camp this summer? Have your 4- or 5-year-old take a spin at ballet. Harvey Milk Arts Center at 50 Scott Street (accessible by the J-Church and 24-Divisadero) will offer Pre-Ballet Mini Dance Camp for three mornings at the end of May.

Each day will begin with dance and will include snack, a related craft and story time. Lessons will develop imagination, rhythm, coordination, attention, flexibility, agility and posture.

At the end of the final day, students will perform a mini-recital for family and friends.

The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday to Thursday, May 29 to 31. (Parents are asked to bring a snack and a drink, and ballet shoes are recommended. Please arrive at 9 a.m. on the first day of camp to fill out the Welcome Packet.) Visit www.sfreconline.com or call 415-554-8742 for more information.

Serve as a greeter for the free concerts. The Friends of Noe Valley Rec Center need a “friend” to help us greet families during our monthly free concert. Let them know about our mailing list and introduce them to our small group. Our greeters hand out flyers and accept donations for the concert series. The next opportunity will be April 14 from 9 to 11 a.m.

• Develop a new plan for the sandbox area or some other park addition. If you know of a person who wants to help re-imagine and re-engineer the sandbox area, please let us know. We are also looking for someone who could add a new creative addition to the park. We have limited space, but we’d love to see a new activity area or artistic addition to the park. The Friends group is looking for suggestions.

• Garden at the Park. Help keep the park beautiful by volunteering with the Ladybug Gardeners on the second Saturday of every month. All ages welcome, no experience necessary. Even an hour would be a big help! Please contact us at info (at) noevalleyreccenter.com.

Summer Camp Stars at Movie Night

Summer camp registration starts March 17, but eager campers can get a head start by coming to Movie Night on Saturday, March 10, at Upper Noe, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The featured film is the original version of “The Parent Trap,” which starts its story at summer camp. In keeping with the theme, Upper Noe staff will be on hand to answer questions as parents and children browse catalogs and fliers.

“We can help find which camp is right for them,” said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen.

This summer Upper Noe will host the Recreation and Parks Department’s popular Pacific Art Camp, which runs for four two-week sessions of dance, theater, art and music.

Children ages 6 to 12 will be divided by age into groups that rotate among the four disciplines, said Clove Galilee, the department’s program coordinator for dance and theater. A fifth one-week half-day session for children ages 5 and 6 will happen August 6 to 10.

You can also see a complete catalog of camps at www.sfreconline.com. Registration begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, either online or in person at Upper Noe and other recreation centers.

Movie Night will start with live music from local dad-band The Funicellos and cartoons. The evening is hosted by Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center.

As with the tot concerts, donations are encouraged. March’s tot concert itself will be moved to March 17 to accommodate the arrangements that need to be made for the film.

Movie Night Needs Volunteers

Volunteers are still needed for Movie Night Saturday, March 10.

The first shift will help set up between 5 and 6 p.m., and the second group will help clean up between 9 and 10 p.m.

“Maybe this is the low-key opportunity you’ve been looking for to get more involved in our community,” said Karen Spira, who helped organize the event.

“Maybe you have a child at home who would enjoy learning about the fulfillment that comes with volunteering. Maybe you just really, really love The Parent Trap. Whatever the case, we need volunteers and would love your help.”

This event was organized by CRC members Allison Muir, Richard Hildreth, and Karen Spira with the help and cooperation of Upper Noe’s Levy Johnson and Cheryl Woltjen.

Summer Classes for Tots

Summer camp will occupy the auditorium—a popular indoor option for tots during the year—but the under-five crowd will have some options at Upper Noe this summer, too, said Cheryl Woltjen, Facility Coordinator for Upper Noe Recreation Center.

“We know that’s a void we wanted to fill,” she said.

There will be an outdoor class every day, mostly in the mornings. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, expect to see outdoor “alternative” recreation, meaning anything that is not sports, she said.

“We’re planning on using picnic tables for finger paining or bringing the toys out,” she said. “We’ll bring out the tot cars, the hula hoops.”

On Tuesday and Thursdays the center plans to offer “Express It,” an outdoor arts and crafts class for children up to three years old. On Wednesdays younger children can take Karate in the morning or make a mess in the kitchen with Petite Bakers in the afternoons.

Woltjen cautioned that all summer programming (besides summer camps) is tentative until mid-March, but she will have a better handle on what’s to come when she talks to parents March 10.

Sandbox Solution Found

Upper Noe’s sandbox finally has a cover, thanks to Karen Spira, a member of the center’s Community Recreation Council.

For the past year, the community has been searching for a solution to the on-going problem of cats using the sandbox as a litter box at night.

“We’re really excited about getting the sandbox covered because this is a health hazard,” said Spira, the mother of a two-year-old boy. “A lot of parents aren’t aware, and kids are bringing snacks into the sandbox.”

Spira and others on the council discussed many possible solutions—chicken wire, something made by a local tailor, a call to neighborhood engineers for ideas. Spira took-on the problem and found a good match for the project.

A web search yielded Custom Sandbox Covers, whose parent company has supplied marine canvas to businesses and government agencies for more than 30 years. The sandbox covers are made of the same high-grade, water permeable canvas used on U.S. Navy vessels.

A chain sewn into the cover’s hem allows it to fit over a sandbox much like a fitted sheet covers a mattress. The chain will be padlocked to a metal loop to prevent theft of the $1,800 cover. The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center will pay for the cover and the lock.

“The tradeoff is that there’s going to be sandbox hours,” Spira said. The cover will be put on every evening when the site’s manager leaves. There is no staff on site Sundays and Mondays, so the sandbox will not be open on those days.

The Friends will also buy signs to explain the closure to parents as well as a box to store the canvas during the day. Spira is hopeful the cover will be ready within two months, she said.

The sandbox dilemma is what spurred Spira to join the Community Recreation Council, which is composed of local residents and Recreation and Parks department staff. Its role is to determine programming and events at Upper Noe, among other tasks.

(Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center is the park’s nonprofit partner and a fund-raising organization made up of neighbors. See story below.)

“To take action on something that’s been bothering me since my son was born has been really gratifying,” said Spira, who has been coming to the park with her husband since they moved around the corner about five years ago.

“We’ve always called the park our hangout because we don’t have a balcony or backyard,” she said. “We really feel grateful the park is here because it’s a wonderful resource.”

She hopes the site’s CRC will grow to include a wide variety of people, and she encourages park users to contact Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen to join the group.

Two Volunteer Organizations, One Park

There are two important but distinct volunteer organization that support and advocate for Upper Noe: the Community Recreation Council and the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center.

The Community Recreation Council is part of the Recreation and Parks Department’s new organization model, implemented a year and a half ago.

Each recreation center has a CRC composed of seven members (including, ideally, one teen member) who meet monthly to discuss programming, safety issues, events and other park matters. Staff members help lead discussions and liaison between the community and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.

(Upper Noe’s CRC needs more volunteers. Learn more here.)

The Friends group was established during the renovation of the park in 2008. Thanks to fiscal sponsorship through the San Francisco Parks Alliance, Friends can raise money for equipment, events, supplies and other park related projects. The Friends group can sponsor events, supplies, and projects that the CRC organizes or deems necessary for the park.

We have purchased many items for Upper Noe including AV equipment used for tot concerts, toys, art supplies, athletic equipment, and gardening projects. The Friends sponsor this newsletter, the free monthly tot concerts, the holiday music concert, and the Noe Valley Elementary School fair.

Together these two organizations give voice to Upper Noe’s community and facility needs.

If you enjoy the free events at Upper Noe, please consider giving a donation to the Friends group, join one of the organizations, or volunteer to help out at one of the events.

Tumbleweed Wanderers Play for the Tots

By turns solemn and lively, the Tumbleweed Wanderers will rock and roll with the tots Saturday, March 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Upper Noe Recreation Center auditorium.

TW is not a traditional kid band, but experience at the Noe Valley Farmer’s Market has shown them that children like their songs, said Jeremy Lyon, who started the band with Zak Mandel-Romann about a year ago.

“A lot of them are getting up and bobbing their legs and dancing,” he said. “They generally seem to have a good time just bopping along.”

The group grew from local roots: Mandel-Romann and Lyon formed an earlier band at Lick Wilmerding High School in San Francisco.

“We spent a lot of time in Noe Valley at Happy Doughnuts, Dolores Park and cafes,” he said.

Lyon met Rob Fidel (vocals, banjo and guitar) at an open mic night in Santa Cruz; he met drummer Daniel Blum during an internship at a recording studio; and Mandel-Romann met keyboardist Patrick Glynn at band camp when both were young.

In the past year Tumbleweed Wanderers have played clubs, cafes, house parties and street shows. They recently finished a whirlwind two-week tour of the Southwest that included stops in California, Arizona and Colorado. On March 9, they will release their first acoustic extended play album at Bottom of the Hill.

This is the group’s first dedicated kid show, and Lyon expects they will focus on familiar cover songs from groups like The Beatles and bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, as well as their own material. They plan to bring a salad of acoustic instruments, including guitar, upright bass, mandolin, banjo, harmonica and a trashcan drumset.

Tot Rock is sponsored by The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center through community donations. All families with children under the age of 5 welcome.

Spring classes begin the week of March 12, and come March 3, you can register for a growing number of choices for all ages at Upper Noe.

In addition to the regular favorites like Moovin’ and Groovin’ and Fairy Tale Frolics, tots will have two new options: Petite Bakers and Aikido. Bakers will be open to children ages three to four who want to stir things up in the facility’s little-used kitchen on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

“The thing with little kids is that they want to chop something, stir something or break something,” said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen. “If you can find recipes that have 12 eggs, you’re set!”

For those who want to wiggle rather than whisk, Aikido will be offered from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays for three- to five-year-olds. The class emphasizes movement using the principles of Aikido, a martial art focused on mindfulness and movement rather than on fighting.

Older children will also have their pick between sports and arts. Both Futsol (indoor soccer) on Tuesdays and indoor basketball on Thursdays will divide children ages 6 to 12 into older and younger age groups to practice skills and drills.

Then on Fridays from 2:30 to 4:30, students can play theater games in a class called “So You Think You Can Act?”

Two hours later, adults can take the stage for an improvisational comedy class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The new classes are in addition to what was offered in the winter, Woltjen said. That means classes like Tango for seniors and Muy Thai for adults and tweens will continue as well.

“We haven’t had to cancel anything,” she said.

Register for classes in person at the center or online at www.sfreconline.org starting March 3.

Field of Dreams

Upper Noe is fielding two Spring Youth Baseball teams, both of which filled the day registration opened on Jan. 27, said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Wotljen.

The teams meet on Tuesdays, with the Kindergarteners starting at 3:30 p.m. and the first- and second-grade students starting an hour later. They will play other teams in the department’s league.

Though other sites still have openings, some players want to swing the bat at Upper Noe only, Woltjen said.

“People should sign up for the waitlist because the department might be able to add more teams,” she said. Interested parents should call Woltjen directly at 415-970-8061.

Summer Camp Preview

The Recreation and Parks Department’s venerated Pacific Art Camp comes to Upper Noe Recreation Center this summer for four two-week sessions of dance, theater, art and music.

Children ages 6 to 12 will be divided by age into groups that rotate among the four disciplines, said Clove Galilee, the department’s program coordinator for dance and theater. A fifth one-week half-day session for children ages 5 and 6 will happen August 6 to 10.

A Parents Night Recital Showcase and Art Exhibition caps each session.

“Each age group performs everything they’ve learned,” she said. “It’s a unique camp.”

There’s plenty to show off. The children make color wheels and self portraits as part of an art curriculum that includes learning about the color spectrum and negative space. In dance they have a chance to choreograph as well as dance to someone else’s tune. They sing rock and a capella in music, and in theater, they create plays and skits.

Each of the four teachers is a specialist in a particular fine art, Galilee said.

“This is our first time at Upper Noe,” she said. “I think we’re going to hit a whole new group of kids, which will be exciting.”

Children must attend both weeks of their camp session, which costs $250 for city residents. Sessions start June 4, June 18, July 9 and July 23. Camp hours are Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Extended care, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., is available for $160 for the two weeks.

These tween-age children may use the playground during their lunch break from noon to 1 p.m. and sometimes in the pre- and after-care hours, said Jenny Rogers, a Cultural Arts Supervisor with the department.

“Our PAC kids are 7 to 12 and would not be allowed to use the equipment designated for use only by younger children,” she said. “We plan to have organized activities during our Pre-Care & After-Care, so it will definitely not be all playground time.”

See a complete catalog of camps at www.sfreconline.com starting Monday, February 6. Registration begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 17. You can register online or in person at Upper Noe Recreation Center.

Coming Attraction: March Movie

March 10 will be Movie Night at Upper Noe, thanks to volunteer Allison Muir, who arranged for the free screening of the original “Parent Trap.”

Muir, a recent transplant from the Balboa Park neighborhood, serves on Upper Noe’s Community Recreation Council, and she hatched her idea at the November meeting. The Community Recreation Council, composed of local residents, works with SF Recreation and Parks to determine programming and events at Upper Noe.

“Upper Noe was one of the big draws of why we bought our house here,” said Muir, who has two children ages one and two. “Since I have little kids, I wanted to make sure there were good things there and that I was contributing.”

She chose the original version of the movie, which stars Hayley Mills and Maureen O’Hara, because she has fond memories of watching the G-rated film with her sisters as a child. She also knew the film could appeal to parents.

“It has a separate story line that’s more adult about divorce and romance as well as having those ‘tween aspects,” said Muir.

What’s more, the story begins at a summer camp. Since registration for Recreation and Parks Department summer camps begins the following Saturday, there will be camp information available in the auditorium before the movie, she said.

“It’s a kick-off for summer camp!” she said.

The evening will start with live music from The Funicellos, a group of groovy dads—including Muir’s husband—who took their name from Annette Funicello, a popular cast member of the Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950s.

As it happens, Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon sing the opening credits to “The Parent Trap,” and Muir hopes the band will play the theme song and more at 6 p.m. as movie go-ers arrive and grab their popcorn. There will also be cartoons before the movie.

The evening is hosted by Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center. As with the tot concerts, donations are encouraged. March’s tot concert itself will be moved to March 17 to accommodate the arrangements that need to be made for the film, said Kate Haug of Friends.

Camp Mather Getaway

Registration for the Camp Mather lottery ends February 5, leaving hundreds of San Francisco residents crossing their fingers in the hopes of being chosen for a cabin or tent space at the rustic week-long summer camp.

“It’s such a great tradition,” said Tanya Shadoan, whose family has gone every year since 2009. The scenery is beautiful, the internet-free atmosphere is relaxing and she always runs into people she knows while meeting new folks, too.

Perhaps best of all, her two daughters, Olivia in fourth grade and Zoe in sixth, love the independence they have there.

“Bikes are ditched everywhere. Nothing is locked. It’s all very safe and very communal,” said the San Francisco native. “People look out for each other’s kids, too.”

Because the cabins are unlocked and meals are prepared by camp staff, the children come and go as they please. During the day they jump on their bikes and head to the many activities offered by the camp: archery, swimming, hiking, ping pong and campfire fun, for example. There are crafts, two talent shows, a bingo night and movie night and a party at the end of the week.

The site is also 45 minutes from the Yosemite, and Shadoan’s family has biked the valley floor and floated the Merced River. Whether with family friends, her parents or her children’s school buddies, Shadoan and her husband Andy Ferguson have enjoyed their visits, and they hope for many more as their children grow.

“I love to see the teenagers who you would think wouldn’t be caught dead going to a family camp with their parents,” she said. They hang out with their friends, buying ice-cream at the general store late at night and pal-ing around. “They love it because they’ve gone since they were kids,” she said. Plays for the Tots

Sweet-tongued Lily Holbrook will sing for the tots at this month’s second Saturday concert on February 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. in Upper Noe Recreation Center’s auditorium.

“I have some songs lined up, and I’m planning on learning a couple of new songs,” said Holbrook, an East Coast native who is studying childhood development.

She plays cover songs, too.

“Kids really respond to Cat Stevens,” she said. Holbrook plays guitar while singing, so making the wheels on the bus go ’round mid-song can be challenging, but she is coming up with alternatives.

She has lived as a musician for the past 14 years, and her three albums have a full band and an edginess to them. The first, “Running From the Sky,” has been described as a somber fairy tale. “They weren’t written with kids in mind, but they work,” she said. Plus, her acoustic sets are more folky, she said.

Facility Coordinator Here to Stay

Upper Noe Recreation Center may have finally found a long-term facility coordinator, just in time for a new year of exciting programming.

Cheryl Woltjen stepped into the role in December and has set to work fulfilling her goal of getting the best programming into the safest and spiffiest facility possible.

“I want it to be a place where you and your kid can feel safe and have a good time in our programs,” she said.

Woltjen joined the Recreation and Parks Department in 1991, working as a substitute instructor. The bulk of her experience lies in working with younger children.

“At the beginning, I was mostly with the afterschool programs,” she said. She was primarily located at Richmond Recreation Center and the Douglass Playground and Midtown Terrace clubhouses.

Woltjen believes the department’s new structure, implemented about a year ago, allows facility coordinators to focus holistically on one site.

“I can really devote all my attention to the well-being of the whole place,” said Woltjen. She hopes to enlist the help of park users by urging them to contact her right away when they see any problems.

Her experience means she knows who to call for what problem when.

“I have the pulse to all the different people I need to contact to fix things,” she said. “I don’t have to start from scratch.”

She is joined by Levi Johnson, the site-based program coordinator who is responsible for adult fitness programming across the city. There are four additional part-time staffers who help set up and break down equipment and staff the office.

A Chicago native, Woltjen now lives in Alameda with her husband and two of her three daughters, ages 17, 25 and 30. An occasional jazzercizer, Woltjen gets most of her exercise while perched on her bicycle. The flat topography of the East Bay island allows her to use her bike like a car, running errands to the store, for example.

Her daughters keep her on her toes, and so will the devoted park users. Wotljen already attended her first Community Recreation Council meeting in December. (See article below.)

She wants park users to know that there is some flexibility in programming and therefore open hours in the gym and auditorium.

“People should call to confirm so they’re not inconvenienced,” she said.

Circus Finelli Comes to Rock the Tots

Circus Finelli will wow the crowds at January’s second-Saturday tot concert, Jan. 14 from 9 to 11 a.m.

The four-women clown troupe specializes in irreverent, cartoonish circus comedy set to the beat of a wide range of instruments.

“We do acrobatics, juggling—funny things,” said Luz Gaxiola, who plays accordion, trombone, kazoo, bombast and theremin. Gaziola is joined by Mahsa Matin on guitar, trombone, trumpet and exotic percussion contraptions, Verka Zaskodna on vocals, duck horn, and melodica, and Molly Shannon’s backup dancing.

You can see a video of Circus Finelli here. (Scroll down the page about half way.)

Tot Rock is sponsored by The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center through community donations. All families with children under the age of 5 welcome.

Ahead at the Recreation Center

Want to get some exercise while your little one makes art?

The suggestion of such a combination class drew a lot of enthusiasm from members of Upper Noe’s Community Recreation Council at its second meeting Dec. 14.

New Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen wrote down programming suggestions bandied about by five council members. Levi Johnson, the site-based program coordinator who is responsible for adult fitness programming across the city, added a few ideas too.

Programming for young children remains a priority. Possibilities include a Mommy and Me yoga, a Mommy and Me crawling class and a Strollercize class that would thread through the neighborhood.

Staff hope to make more use of the site’s stage, potentially opening up more programming while keeping the auditorium open for tots. The new adult belly dancing class on Thursday afternoons will start out on the stage, Johnson said. If its popularity grows, it would move down to the auditorium floor, he said. (See article below.)

A spontaneous board-game club for tweens has taken center stage Fridays after school. So far a handful of parents have wrangled the dozen or so participants, making room chess, Jenga and other games. A generous donation from Blue Orange Games instantly doubled the number of options available to the children.

Neither program is in the winter schedule; however, belly dancers can pay per class and at present the game club is open to all comers. (Parents are encouraged to stay if their children are less mature.)

Other programming possibilities included a Friday night movie series that would appeal to children and parents alike and a dog training or dog exercise class.

“We’re trying to build senior and afterschool school-age programming,” Wotljen said.

The council also continued discussion on how best to store the auditorium’s many toys during programming for those who don’t use them. Woltjen has asked the department’s capable carpenters to look at the site and come up with ideas for a custom-built solution.

Pay Any Way

Upper Noe is now equipped to take your money three ways: credit, debit or cash. You can register and pay for an entire term or pay for just a drop-in class.

Belly Up to Upper Noe

Adults looking for an interesting fitness regimen can shake it up at the center’s new Belly Dancing Class on Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on the auditorium stage.

Though the class wasn’t organized in time to make it into the winter schedule, hip shakers can drop in and pay $5 for each class.

Lost that baby blanket that grandma spent months knitting? What about a cherished stuffed animal or toy? Frazzled parents will be happy to learn that Upper Noe Recreation Center has a lost & found inside the hallway across from the office. Come claim your goods!

An Opportunity to Improve the Park

Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center would like to reconfigure the sandbox area or the back patio, two capital improvements that are eligible for funding from the Community Opportunity Fund.

The fund is part of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks General Obligation Bond, and the third and final round of applications are due in June.

The final round of projects will divvy up $1.25 million. Applications will be released in March, and required workshops will happen between March and April. Applications will be due in June, and winners will be announced in September, according to the department’s website.

Last year’s winners ranged from stairway beautification at Lincoln Park to an adult fitness area at Boeddeker Park, with grants between $6,500 to nearly quarter million dollars awarded.

The public monies must be matched by private funds, so please email us at info (at) noevalleyreccenter.com with your ideas.

Farmers’ Market CD Release Party

December’s second-Saturday concert for tots will feature not one, not two, but 11 bands and musicians playing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate the recently released Farmers’ Market CD.

Look for The SHE’s, Erin Brazill & the Brazillionaires, Lily Holbrook, Mick Shaffer, Kailua Blue, Brian Bergeron, Circus Finelli, The Improbabillies (formerly Failure to Disperse), David Kesler, Kif and James Byfield (of Blind Lemon Pledge)—all featured on the CD. There will be face painting for the kids and food trucks on the basketball court.

A holiday event co-sponsored by the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center and the Noe Valley Farmers’ Market, the concert celebrates the music played at the market each Saturday.

Richard Hildreth, who arranges music for the market and for the second-Saturday tot concerts at Upper Noe, produced the CD. His goal was to do more than showcase great local musicians, he said. He also hopes to raise awareness of the neighborhood’s effort to buy the parking lot that hosts the market, on 24th Street between Sanchez and Vicksburg streets.

“One thing I’ve already noticed is how many people are still unaware of what could happen to the parking lot,” Hildreth said.

The lot is owned by the Noe Valley Ministry, which needs the money from a sale to refurbish its 123-year-old Sanchez Street building. Advocates are hoping the city will use some of its open space acquisition funds to cover at least part of the estimated $4 million asking price. Neighborhood-raised funds would cover the rest of the acquisition costs, the conversion of the lot to a flexible-use town square and upkeep. Visit Residents for Noe Valley Town Square to stay abreast of the progress. Scroll down to the post on Feb. 22, 2011, to see the conceptual drawings of the square.

Donations at the party will go toward the Town Square effort.

Looking Good From Behind

Thanks to all who came out and helped plant the long-neglected backside of the Recreation Center!

Young and old, familiar faces and new—-many people helped make the Sanchez Street side a more beautiful place.

The effort started Saturday, Nov. 12, when volunteers prepared the site for planting. The following Friday and Saturday, volunteers planted hundreds of plants. Nature did its job, too, adding heavy rain on Sunday that probably helped start the plants on the right foot.

The dream to green the Sanchez Street side of the center is an old one. Lead Ladybug Gardener Joan Lionberger, who has lived across the street from Upper Noe since she was born, said she doesn’t think this hillside has ever been planted, so it was quite a monumental occasion to get it planted with hundreds of native California plants.

There are a few more plants that we can use to fill in a few more spots in early December. A special thanks to Teresa O’Brien, park section supervisor, Kristin Bowman and Brian Dwyer from the Recreation and Parks Department, who helped make the planting happen.

Neighbors Weigh in on Programming, Storage

Upper Noe’s Community Recreation Council will hold its second meeting Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 7 to 8:15 p.m., when staff expect to introduce the center’s new facility coordinator and continue discussion from the first meeting in November.

Last month, six residents joined Recreation and Park staff at Upper Noe’s first CRC meeting to discuss programming and storage.

“We’re thinking of more dance and theater for adults and tweens,” said Thomas Iglesias, the site’s temporary facility coordinator.

Three council members have preschool-aged children, so there was also discussion of the immensely popular tot programming and the availability of the auditorium for open tot hours.

“All the neighborhood members thought the tot programs were a big success and a vital part of the neighborhood,” said Kate Haug, a neighbor and FONVRC co-chair who is serving on the council.

The community members agreed that the heavy use by children, their families and their care-givers added a vibrancy to the park.

“It’s a great example of a public space providing a needed service to the community,” she said.

At the same time, everyone agreed that expanding programming and use of the auditorium are goals for the Council, she said. One challenge will be to juggle class times to make best use of the space for all ages.

Storage looms large because the auditorium’s many toys—a joy to the tots who play there but a barrier to multi-purpose use—cannot be stored beneath the stage because the access is too difficult, he said.

“We’re looking for some storage that’s good to the eye,” Thomas said. “We’re thinking of looking for storage bins and put it where the couches are.”

Iglesias continues to invite anyone interested in influencing the center to come to the meetings, though in the future they may be closed to all but council members.

Councils comprised of staff and local residents based out of each recreation center in the city will eventually shape local programming, an idea the department rolled out about a year ago. Ideally, the Councils have seven members, including one teen. To fill out an application, please ask at the Rec Center, or show up at the meeting, or print out the version on our website, www.noevalleyreccenter.com, under the tab “Getting Involved.” To learn more, please email Iglesias at thomas.iglesias (at) sfgov.org or his supervisor, Karla Rosales at karla.rosales (at) sfgov.org.

Winter Classes Begin

Registration for winter classes begins Saturday, Dec. 17, and Upper Noe and its surrounding sister centers have dozens of classes for all ages on tap.

New this term at Upper Noe is a tango dance class for seniors, said Facility Coordinator Thomas Iglesias.

“It will be our first senior program in a while,” he said.

There will also be the usual run of art and movement classes for tots. Tweens and teens can join basketball teams for three age levels, plus the usual tennis and Muy Thai kickboxing classes. Adults can whip themselves into shape with a boot camp or a Pilates class.

“Everything that worked, we’re keeping,” Iglesias said. “We didn’t grow too much because [the department is] telling us we’re over budget.”

One neighborhood over, the Eureka Recreation Center, 100 Collingwood Street, has a long list of classes that include more options for tweens, adolescents and adults, like cooking, dodgeball and street hockey. There is also a social club for seniors.

Across Mission Street, St. Mary’s Recreation Center, Murray Street and Justin Drive, offers dance and martial arts for all ages, plus adult tennis. Bernal Heights Recreation Center, 500 Moultrie Street, has a line-up of classes very similar to Upper Noe’s.

To the south, Glen Park Recreation Center, Elk and Chenery streets, offers seniors art and fitness. Adults can relax with Tai Chi, and children can enjoy a month of Saturdays with Tree Frog Treks, a science education and adventure camp.

To register, visit www.sfreconline.org. The department has re-vamped its website, so the browsing process has changed. To see our programs or those at our sister centers, select Browse Programs and do an advanced search for All Programs. You can then browse by facility.

Holiday Hours at Upper Noe

All our local recreation centers have the same business hours: Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year Christmas and New Year’s fall on Sundays and the official “day off” to mark each holiday is the following Monday (Dec. 26 and Jan. 2). The good news is that means there are no special holiday hours at any of these centers this year. (The bad news is that rec centers could be open on Mondays if the department’s budget wasn’t so diminshed.)

Bernal Heights, Glen Park and Upper Noe recreation centers will all offer mid-December holiday workshops for the under-five crowd. At Upper Noe, young ones will celebrate the holidays with crafts, songs and stories at Holiday Happenings, a two-day workshop on Dec. 14 and 16 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Bernal will also have a holiday camp the week before Christmas. See www.sfreconline.org for more details. To search by facility, choose Browse Programs, then do an advanced search for All Classes. You can then sort by facility.

Holiday Tree Lighting

The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department invites San Franciscans to the 82nd annual lighting of the venerable Monterey cypress tree at McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park, Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The evening is free and features small rides for children, live entertainment, a cookie factory, arts and crafts and a visit from Santa. For more information, visit www.sfrecpark.org.

Volunteers Needed

• Serve as a greeter for the free concerts. The Friends of Noe Valley Rec Center need a “friend” to help us greet families during our monthly free concert. Let them know about our mailing list and introduce them to our small group. Our greeters hand out flyers and accept donations for the concert series. The next opportunity will be Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Even volunteering for one hour would make a big difference!

• Help advise the city on what classes should be offered at the Upper Noe Rec Center. Serve a term on the Upper Noe Recreation Center’s Community Recreation Council and help shape programming at the Center. A teen member is still needed! Please contact Thomas Iglesias at 970-8061. The form is available on our website and at the center. Please either drop it off or mail it to: Thomas Igelsias, UNRC, 295 Day Street, SF, 94131.

Please contact us at info (at) noevalleyreccenter.com

Urgent Call for 20 Planting Volunteers

We need all (gloved) hands on deck Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19 because we are finally ready to plant the Sanchez Street side of the recreation center!

As any Upper Noe regular knows, the west side of the building was not planted or landscaped as part of the massive 2008 renovation. Two years and one failed grant attempt after we started, we are now laden with more than 300 California native plants, thanks to a $1,000 gift from the Friends of Noe Valley and donations from the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center.

By the end of the weekend, we hope to have started a “Meadow with Small Grasses and Colorful Perennials,” one of three lawn replacement designs created by the folks at Yerba Buena Nursery in Woodside. (You can view more details here.)

Look for a canvas of Siskiyou Blue “bunch grass,” dotted with clumps of yarrow, Humingbird Trumpet and Douglass Iris. The showy “foothill beardtongue” will line the path.

We need at least 10 people each day to plant these drought-tolerant, low maintenance natives. The plantings will happen Friday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Unfortunately, our bright posters pasted around the neighborhood have the wrong time for the Friday planting. Rest assured, it is 9 a.m. to noon!)

In addition, we need volunteers the previous Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon to help prepare the site. This second Saturday of every month is a regular grounds-keeping gig, led by Ladybug Gardener Joan Lionberger. A Noe Valley native, Lionberger is passionate about keeping the park looking good and has volunteered more hours than we can count to make it that way. She needs neighbors to lend a helping hand in this extraordinary planting project that has been years in the planning.

Upper Noe Recreation Center will convene its first Community Recreation Council meeting Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in the center’s auditorium.Staff expect to see the eight people who have already filled out applications, but for now, Iglesias is also inviting anyone and everyone to come to the meetings.Topics will include what programs the community would like to see offered, facility cleanliness and safety.Programming of any kind is up for discussion. Teen movie night? Rocket club? More tot programming? Boxing? The Council will work together to see what the Center can offer to make it a hub of neighborhood activity.

“It’s just being formed as we’re going,” said Thomas Iglesias, the site’s new facility coordinator. The evening will start with introductions all around before launching into a discussion of the objectives and goals, he said.

Councils comprised of staff and local residents based out of each recreation center in the city will eventually shape local programming, an idea the department rolled out about a year ago. Ideally, the Councils have seven members, including one teen.To fill out an application, please ask at the Rec Center, or show up at the meeting, or print out the version on our website, www.noevalleyreccenter.com. (Look under the tab “Getting Involved.”) To learn more, please email Iglesias at thomas.iglesias (at) sfgov.org or his supervisor, Karla Rosales at karla.rosales (at) sfgov.org.

Meet Thomas Iglesias, New Facility Coordinator

Thomas Iglesias, Upper Noe’s new facility coordinator, stepped into his role in September, and immediately set to work finding ways to build the center’s programming while keeping it safe and clean.

“This is a beautiful facility,” said Iglesias, who is on loan from Sunset Recreation Center while the department searches for a permanent facility coordinator for Upper Noe. “When I hand it off, I want to make sure everything is running smoothly and in the right direction.”

Since he started at Upper Noe, Iglesias has worked hard to convene the much-needed Community Recreation Council (see article above) while keeping on top of various repairs, like replacing the worn-down playground mat and fixing the playground gate.

His relationship with the Recreation and Parks Department started 16 years ago, when a friend encouraged him to apply for a job as a part-time, as-needed athletic coach. He started with youth baseball.

“It grew from there,” he says.

Iglesias studied broadcasting at San Francisco State University, but his real passion lies in recreation, he said.

“I love coaching,” says the former Marine. “Tiny tots to seniors, I try to do everything because I love it.”

His taste in sports is equally catholic, though he admits to only watching—not playing—football these days. A San Francisco native who graduated from Archbishop Riordan High School, Iglesias and his wife Jisel live in Portola with their two “park and rec” boys, ages 14 and 9.

“They play everything,” Iglesias said. A chip off the old block, perhaps?

Youth Classes Underenrolled

No dodgeball, Zumba or girls’ sports? Though tot classes remain popular, classes for older kids at Upper Noe Recreation Center are being cut and consolidated due to under-enrollment.

“It’s disheartening, because the gym is there and it’s underused,” said Facility Coordinator Thomas Iglesias, who would like to see the facility inside as popular as the playground outside.

This fall, Upper Noe offered two sessions of Taster’s Choice, the girls-only sports buffet that includes archery, track and tennis. But the two classes, divided by age, had to be combined because so few girls enrolled, said Brendan Dunnigan, who teaches archery.

“We want to build girls’ programming across the city,” he said. There are many options, including roller soccer, but no class can run without participants.

The dodgeball class was cut completely, he said.

For adults, one Zumba class was taken off the schedule for lack of participants. It’s a shame, Iglesias said, especially because the teacher, Margaret Silva, is personable and energetic.

“She’s very patient, and she talks about lifestyle changes,” Iglesias said.

Iglesias is hoping the center’s Community Recreation Council will be able to suggest programming that will bring in the kids and adults alike. The Council, which is comprised of park users, Iglesias and his manager, Karla Rosales, will convene its first meeting Wednesday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. (See article above.)

Upper Noe has had as hard a time attracting members to its council as it has attracting kids and adults to its programming.

“I invite anyone who wants to be there—come on in, and we’ll figure it out from there,” Iglesias said.

Parents, PTA members and school administrators are encouraged to contact the center to discuss possible activities and times. Also, Rec and Park winter quarter catalogs are available to distribute at your school. Contact Iglesias at 415-970-8061 or Thomas.iglesias (at) sfgov.org or his supervisor Karla Rosales at karla.rosales (at) sfgov.org.

New Fall Classes Begin Now

The Recreation and Parks Department offers two terms of classes each fall, and the second set began this week. Young ones can celebrate the holidays with crafts, songs and stories at Holiday Happenings, a two-day workshop on Dec. 14 and 16 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Otherwise, the tot classes are full again, but there are several options for tweens. Muay Thai Kickboxing for children ages 9 to 13 happens Fridays from 5 to 6 p.m. Based on the martial art from Thailand, this sport focuses on increasing cardio endurance and strengthening core muscle groups through calisthenics drills and practice kicking and striking boxing pads.Tennis for children 12 and under happens Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 1 to 2 p.m. These basic classes focus on strokes, rallying and playing matches. Students must bring their own racquets and wear appropriate clothing. (Scholarships are available to offset the cost.)There is still room in many of the adult classes, including Pilates on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, cardio salsa on Thursday evenings, yoga on Tuesday evenings and, of course, Saturday’s Zumba class at 9 a.m.Registration for classes running now can be done in person at the Center. Many classes will accept drop-in students.

Winter quarter classes will be available for browsing online at www.sfreconline.org starting Monday, Nov. 28. Registration starts Saturday, Dec. 17. You can register online or in person at Upper Noe.

City League Basketball at Upper Noe

Winter ball is here: The Recreation and Parks Department starts its winter youth basketball league in January. Most of the city’s recreation centers field grade-specific teams that play each other in the city-wide league. Facility Coordinator Thomas Iglesias will offer to field nine teams, from kindergarten to eighth grade. Last season he got enough players for a kindergarten, third- and fourth-grade team. This season he would like to see more.

Children join individually or schools can set up a team. Registration will begin November 28, but anyone who is interested can co`ntact Iglesias beforehand by emailing thomas.iglesias (at) sfgov.org or by calling 415-970-8061.

Nobody from Nashville is six men from the Bay Area who will delight the tots Saturday, Nov. 12, with their hard-driving bluegrass tunes. The band plays traditional bluegrass songs as well as covers, adding a slight contemporary edge to their sound, said Jamie Maddox, who plays the five-string banjo.“The music is traditional blue-grass based, but we’re not quite that laid back,” said Maddox.Nobody will throw in a few familiar favorites for kids like Wheels on the Bus and Old MacDonald, but the children seem to like the rest of their repertoire, too, he said.

The rest of the band is Maddox’s son, Jay, who plays the guitar, Chris Eccles on mandolin, Ron Esparza on fiddle, Jim Dee on upright bass and Jim McCall on the Dobro. Dobro?

“It has a twang to it,” Maddox explained. Similar to a guitar in appearance, the Dobro requires a pick and is played with the thumb, index and middle finger, he said.

Thanks to a meeting between Friends of Noe Valley Rec Center volunteers and Recreation and Parks staff, there are two nice new signs at the park. The first, posted on the field entrance, reminds visitors that no dogs are allowed on the athletic field. We haven’t heard reports of any dogs on the athletic field in a while now. The second, posted on the Sanchez street of the park, directs visitors to enter the park on 30th or Day streets. Thank you Kristin Bowman for making us these new signs.

Thanks to all those who made our September 25 Elementary School Fair a fabulous success. More than 300 families braved the foggy rain to learn more about local schools.

Representatives from the 35 participating schools remarked on the huge turnout.

Richard and Linda from the Friends of Noe Valley, Olga from Upper Noe Neighbors, and Amy, Masha and Elfi from our neighborhood set up tables and chairs and pointed parents in the right direction. Their calm and friendly support set the tone for a informative and productive—rather than frantic—-morning.

Thanks also to our corporate sponsor www.urbansitter.com.

The San Francisco Public Library and Parents for Public Schools also worked tables filled with helpful information. And what about that Book Mobile!

Organizer Kate Haug gets a special thanks for coming up with this great idea and seeing it through to every last detail.

Our website, www.noeschools.com, is still up and can hopefully serve as a resource for those interested in schools on the south side of town. We have sorted the schools by geographical area, by pre-K and by K-8 status. (Each school has a link.) Our Resources tab is filled with useful information. Good luck, parents, and thank YOU for coming!

Ladybug Gardeners Fly Weeds Away Home

Thanksto the 12—12!—Upper Noe Neighbor volunteers who came out and gardened with FNVRC’s Kate Haug September 10. The crew cleared the bed at the base of Joby’s Run on Day Street and much of the Sanchez Street side of the Recreation Center as well.In fact, all the beds around the Center got some attention that day. Teresa O’Brien, the head gardener for our area, was impressed and inspired by the work that the volunteers had completed, said Haug. That support translates into continued help from the Recreation and Parks Department, which cannot afford to send a Saturday gardener unless we have a significant number of volunteers helping each month.

Join us October 8 to ready the Sanchez beds for a November planting.

Thanks to Friends of Noe Valley, which generously donated $1,000 of proceeds from last May’s Garden Tour toward our greening project on the Sanchez side of the Recreation Center. (The group has also donated funds to green the schoolyard at James Lick Middle School.) “We wanted it to be something that’s visible in the community,” said Linda Lockyer, event chair and board member of FNV.Thanks to ample advertising, this year’s Garden Tour attracted double the number of people in past years, bringing in $4,000 in all, Lockyer said.

Every year, FNV donates proceeds from the tour to public beautification projects in Noe Valley. The group is looking for folks who have proposals for next year’s proceeds. They will decide which gardens to tour and which projects to fund in January or February, Lockyer said. Please email suggestions for both to info@friendsofnoevalley.com

Dig the Design

Thanks to Mary Szczepanik of Valencia Design Studio, who responded to our plea for a volunteer graphic designer. She created our new postcards and posters full of information about the Center and our group.Szczepanik has been designing websites and promotional materials for two years, having switched careers from writing political content for election-time flyers. She knows how to target an audience.
“I tend to think about the hierarchy of what you want to convey,” said Szczepanik, who studies design at City College of San Francisco. She designed the postcards using FNVRC’s signature shades of green and its familiar logo, then added as much useful information as she could. For her, the job seemed a natural marriage of her interests and her work.

“I live in the neighborhood, and I was looking for something volunteer in and I design,” said Szczepanik, who is expecting her first child in the next two weeks.

We are looking for people to help distribute flyers at coffee houses and events like the Noe Valley Harvest Festival. If you can help, please contact molly (at) noevalleyreccenter.com.

Halloween Fun with Basho & Friends

Grab your costume and come on down to dance to the beats of BASHO & Friends Saturday, October 29, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Saturday’s show will feature a mixture of Spanish and English songs, supported by a Halloween theme throughout, said founder Basho Mosko, father of an 18-month-old son. Mosko started BASHO & Friends in 2009, creating music videos and compact discs in English, Spanish, French and Mandarin that teach everything from the alphabet to self-esteem.

He will be joined by his business partner and friend Ben Lybrand as the DJ and Tommy Shepherd as the beatboxer. Rap is part of their repertoire, but BASHO music spans the spectrum from bouncy pop to country twang, all with a positive message, says Mosko. His own experience spans the education spectrum, covering more than 15 years in the classroom as a credentialed bilingual teacher, writing for Sesame Street and Lango foreign language education company and starting an arts-based afterschool program for elementary school children in Oakland.Mosko likes to tell a story, and his lyrics don’t talk down to children.

“It’s very accessible,” said Mosko, who works in Cisco Systems’ corporate philanthropic department helping nonprofits structure their own compelling stories.

Listen to the music, see the videos and learn more by visiting www.bashoandfriends.com.Tot Rock is sponsored by the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center through community donations.

It’s that time of year again: the season before elementary school applications are due. Anxious parents will spend hours touring schools, analyzing test scores, consulting friends and reading blogs and listservs, hoping to find a school to fit their families.

In the spirit of supporting local schools and local parents, the Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center will host an elementary school fair Sunday, September 25, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Parents and administrators from public, private and parochial schools in Glen Park, Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, the Mission, Eureka Valley, the Castro, Miraloma Heights, the Market Street Corridor and the 280 Corridor will be on hand to answer questions.

Parents for Public Schools will host an enrollment workshop between 9 and 10 a.m. This nonprofit organization works closely with the San Francisco Unified School District, and its representatives know the ins and outs of the new enrollment system.

The San Francisco Public Library will have a Bookmobile on hand, and you’ll be able to apply for a library card. The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department will have staff available to register you for a family account, sign you up for classes and answer questions.

Please visit our Noe Schools fair website (www.noeschools.com) for links to the schools, which we have divided by location and by program. The site also contains school-hunting tips and more information about the public school lottery. Feel free to email organizer Kate Haug with any questions or offers to volunteer.

Erin Brazill and the Brazillionaires will get the kids swinging to their cabaret pop sound at Upper Noe Recreation Center Saturday, September 10, from 9 to 11 a.m.

“This will be our first exclusive all-kids show,” said lead singer Brazill, who writes the music and plays acoustic guitar. Though the band is accustomed to entertaining the big kids at nightclubs like Cafe du Nord and Bottom of the Hill, Brazill has long been playing music for the elementary school students she teaches.

“The songs have a lot of imagery,” she said.

They also have a lot of interesting accompaniments: Kelley Corton will play the musical saw and glockenspiel (similar to a xylophone) and Johnny Sidaris will play his homemade cigar-box slide guitar, a washboard and a clarinet. Joe Wilcockson on organ and Dawn Mermer on standup bass will make up the rest of Saturday’s band.

Brazill, known to many Noe Valley children as “my piano teacher,” describes the band’s sound as “scratchy Tom-Waits-ish instrumentation and cabaret-meets-jazz vocals.”

In addition to original music, the band will play some cover songs for the kids, like “Rattled” by the Traveling Willburies, “Creep” by Radiohead, and “If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’d a Baked a Cake.”

Tot Rock is sponsored by The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center through community donations. All families with children under the age of 5 welcome.

Ladybug Gardeners Urgently Needed

The Ladybug Gardeners return to Upper Noe’s grounds Saturday, September 10, at 9 a.m., following a two-month summer hiatus taken for want of volunteers.

“The city did not want to put in any more overtime for gardeners if there’s only one volunteer showing up,” said lead Ladybug Joan Lionberger. For the past few months, only three volunteers were on hand to assist the city gardener, she said. She hopes to have more like 12 this month.

“A dirty dozen would be great,” she said.

The need is more urgent than ever because the site’s regular gardener has taken sick leave, and the temporary gardener is not as attentive, Lionberger said.

“If people look around they will see the weeds and flowers dying and plants torn out,” she said. “We need help on redoing birdfeeders, picking up trash, pulling weeds—everything that accumulated over the summer.”

Ladybug Gardeners meet the second Saturday of every month at the same time the concerts for tots are running. The gardening is a great way for families to spend two hours a month, too, Lionberger said.

“I’ve got games and gloves for the kids, if they come,” she said. Adults are advised to bring their own gloves and a trowel or two.

“My thought is if the kids see the parents working, they’ll take a little pride, too,” she said. For more information, email us.

The last commemorative donor tile was laid into the wall surrounding the playground this month, bringing to a close a fundraising campaign that helped usher in an Upper Noe Recreation Center renaissance.

Thank you, donors—come take a look at your tiles!

Thanks to neighborhood support, Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center raised more than $75,000. The money bought the sound system that rocks the tots on the second Saturday of each month, a video projector as well as new sports equipment, toys and art supplies. There is money set aside for ongoing projects like communications and plantings as well as for unforeseen expenses, like the need for a sandbox cover and an outdoor bulletin board.

The bulk of the tiles were laid in December 2008, three months after the facility and grounds celebrated a grand re-opening. The 1950s era building had been closed for two years while it and the surrounding 2.5 acres underwent an $11.6 million city-funded renovation that included a reinforced gym roof, new heating and electric systems and a new playground.

During the closure, Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center formed under the leadership of neighborhood moms Alexandra Torre and Molly Sterkel. Through parties, teas and tiles, Friends raised money and a sense of park stewardship in the community. Behind the scenes, volunteer Daphne Humes deftly handled the administrative tasks.

Twenty-five tiles were bought in this second round, said Kate Haug, co-chair of Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center. Though the campaign has ended, you can still make a tax-deductable donation to Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center by visiting our website,www.noevalleyreccenter.com/donate. Your contributions will go toward equipment, toys, supplies, plants and events like our tot concerts.

Ask and Ye Shall Receive

Friends co-chairwoman Molly Sterkel reports that the Recreation and Parks Department quickly fixed the weathered playground surface beneath the merry-go-round after she brought it to the attention of department heads at the end of July. The partnership between an attentive parks department and observant park users keeps our playground safe and spiffy, so please email us if you notice things that need fixing.

A Special Plea: Help!

The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Center would like to recruit a few volunteers to help with both one-time tasks and ongoing (but simple) obligations. We need:

a greeter for our tot concerts on the second Saturday of each month.

a regular visitor to serve as a playground scout by watching for maintenance/playground hazards and alerting staff.

people to help with our fall School Fair.

someone to update our group’s brochure/flyer/postcard.

someone to design, order and install an additional community information bulletin board near the 30th Street entrance to the park.

Finally, the Ladybug Gardeners are suffering for lack of volunteers. The city hires a gardener to assist volunteers, so we need a minimum of seven helpers per session. If we don’t get enough volunteers, our program will be discontinued.

To help, please email Kate or Molly

Upper Noe’s Facility Coordinator Joe Scott has moved on to the Eureka Valley Recreation Center, and his replacement—Thomas Iglesias—will not move in until September 1, we’re told.

Meanwhile, we have the very capable Levi Johnson at the helm. Johnson has been running our summer camps. Feel free to email him or call him at the center, 415-970-8061. If you are unable to reach him, please contact his manager, Karla Rosales, 415-831-6819. For maintenance issues, please always call 311. In case of emergency, call 911.

Johnson has been with the Recreation and Parks Department only two years, but in that time he’s worked at five facilities: Bernal, Eureka, Hamilton, Richmond and Upper Noe recreation centers.

“Now this is my home,” he said, taking time from a busy day for an interview in Upper Noe’s sunny front office.

Johnson has been something of a nomad in his life before Rec and Park, too. He hails from Jackson, California, a Gold Rush town in the Sierra Foothills that is home to about 4,500 people. From there he moved east, earning a BA in Physical Education from Florida State University. He returned west to get a graduate degree in Sports Management from USF.

“Being from a small country town, I love the city,” said Johnson, who lives near Golden Gate Park.

Johnson said his is favorite hobby is organizing gatherings of Florida State alumni: barbeques, football-watching parties. Not surprisingly, many of his good friends are from Florida State. Surprisingly, he knew none of them in school—he met them through the alumni gatherings.

Fall into Fall Classes
Registration begins August 6 for Fall classes. Upper Noe has added a yoga and a Zumba class for adults and a range of options for kids. Children can read and reenact fairy tales during Tuesday morning’s Fairytale Frolics. No fewer than four Rec and Tot soccer classes will introduce pre-school aged children to the game in a non-competitive environment. Third- and fourth-graders can join separate co-ed teams that practice Tuesday evenings, and girls can ditch the boys and try various sports during Saturday morning’s Taster’s Choice class.

Expect tot fare like Movin’ and Groovin’, Tot Picasso and Tot Gym to fill quickly. And if the class fills before you sign up? Search for tot, youth and adult classes at the many nearby recreation centers: Glen Park, St. Mary’s Park, Bernal Heights and Eureka Valley. (Bernal and Eureka are very close to stops on MUNI’s 24 Divisidero line.) See “Activities by Location” starting on page 90 in the Fall 2011 Activities Guide.

You can pick up a full catalog at any library or neighborhood recreation center. To see listings online, visit SF Rec Online. To search for our center’s programs, click on Programs tab, then click on “Click HERE TO SEARCH BY FACILITY OR ADVANCED SEARCH” and choose “Upper Noe Recreation Center.”

You can register in person at Upper Noe August 6 or online from that Saturday on. To register online, you must create a Family Account. Substantial scholarships are available. Call 415-831-6800 for more information.

Fun Finelli

Who knew what you could do with a kazoo? Find out whenCircus Finelli performs for the tots Saturday, August 13, 9 to 11 a.m. in the Upper Noe Recreation Center auditorium.

Verka Zaskodna, Molly Shannon, Luz Gaxiola and Mahsa Matin met at the San Francisco Clown Conservatory and have performed together for audiences from the Czech Republic to Montana in the five years since graduation.

“We’re trying to bring fun to the masses,” said Gaxiola, who can play accordion while balancing on a board on a ball, among other feats. The group would be familiar to anyone who has attended Noe Valley’s Harvest Festivals or caught them at the Noe Valley Farmer’s Market. They’re hard to miss: Matin is a one-woman orchestra, thanks to a 50-pound pack of percussion instruments she wears and plays while strumming steel guitar and singing, for example.

Circus Finelli is more than music, of course. There is dancing, juggling, balancing and comedy, too.

“Circus comedy is our primary foundation,” Gaxiola said. Their group is named for Judy Finelli, a juggler with the revered Pickle Family Circus. Formed in the mid-seventies, Pickle eschewed the traditional animal and three-ring circus for acrobatics and comedy. Many former Pickles teach at the Clown Conservatory.

“We have some audience participation as well,” Gaxiola said. Sometimes she asks for assistants to help with the triangle and other instruments; sometimes Shannon gets the kids to dance. Accordion or kazoo, you can expect fun-filled entertainment befitting a bunch of clowns.

Tot Rock is sponsored by The Friends of Noe Valley Recreation Centerthrough community donations. All families with children under the age of 5 welcome.

Field of Dreams

Ah, to feel green grass between the toes, to run carefree until you drop, and then to roll around on mother nature’s lush carpet. Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? Well, apparently it is so much so that a few dogs have succumbed to that temptation in the Upper Noe athletic field, much to the chagrin of recreation center personnel and neighbors who witness this transgression.

While no dog-related messes or damage have been reported, San Francisco health code prohibits dogs from being on the field. The athletic field is for sports practice, team games, and toddler adventure. Park Services Manager Kristin Bowman is aware of the problem and has discussed solutions with FNVRC, such as posting larger signs and locking the field when staff end their shifts.

Owners who want grass for their pets are encouraged to visit the Douglass Park dog run on Douglass at 27th Street. (The run, a large grassy area used exclusively for dogs, can be accessed on 27th Street.

Meanwhile, If you see a dog on the Upper Noe field, you can gently remind the owner about the No Dogs policy there. You can also report issues todogs@noevalleyreccenter.com.

Field to be Closed when Center is Closed

In late July, Friends Molly Sterkel, Chris Faust, and Jaime A. met with Recreation and Parks Department staff to discuss staffing, security procedures, playground maintenance and other matters related to Upper Noe. Staff is now aware of several maintenance issues in the playground, including slamming gates, broken play equipment and worn areas on the play surface. In response to dogs on the athletic field, access to the field will change: staff will lock the field when they lock the building (and even earlier as the days grow shorter) to prevent dogs from using the field at night.

Expect to see two new signs, one of the athletic field reminding users that dogs are not allowed there, and one for the Sanchez Street side of the park directing people to the main recreatin center entrance on Day and 30th streets.

Then There’s Those Cats….

Sadly, the sandbox continues to double as a kitty litter box. We have spoken directly with General Manager Phil Ginsburg, Deputy Director Bob Palacio and Manager Kristin Bowman, and our project is on the Recreation and Parks Department list. Unfortunately, the department’s construction and maintenance divisions are understaffed due to budget cuts; we are in long line of work needing to be done to the city’s parks.

The Friends have $3,000 available to put toward a cover. We looked at using a hot tub cover, but the size was not right. If you have any suggestions that fit that price range, please email us.

In the meantime, the department has asked our custodians to do a daily sweep of the box. This is no small task in these times of budget cuts—custodians are in great demand—and we appreciate the attention staff has brought to this matter. Temporary site director Levi Johnson will have a scoop and plastic bags on hand in the front office. Please pitch in by cleaning any mess you see and (hopefully) by helping find a solution.

FNVRC Accepts Award

Friend Chris Faust accepted our award as a “Volunteers of the Year” at the Neighborhood Parks Council’s Summer Social on July 13. The award recognizes our advocacy and stewardship of the park. (Ours was one of 11 awards given.)

The NPC is a nonprofit park advocacy organization that works to link department policy to research and public input. It will soon merge with the city’s other park advocacy organization, the San Francisco Parks Trust. Read on to learn more.

A Marriage of Equals

This Fall, San Francisco’s two nonprofits that support the Recreation and Parks Department will become one organization dedicated to their combined interests of park advocacy, department accountability and resource development.

According to a policy paper released in August, the newly created San Francisco Parks Alliance will focus on community organizing, park advocacy, public education and public policy research. A citizen-based Parks Policy Committee will advise the organization on matters of public policy and advocacy.

The marriage of the Neighborhood Parks Council, formed by a coalition of park groups in 1996, and the San Francisco Parks Trust, formed in 1971 with a generous private donation, will eliminate overlapping programs. Increasingly, the two organizations had come to look more like each other.

“We…noted that NPC’s vigorous advocacy was leading to a greater philanthropic investment in our parks and SFPT’s philanthropic contributions were leading to more park advocacy,” said NPC Executive Director Meredith Thomas in a July progress update.

Learn more by reading the full overview on the NPC website or by reading the three-page policy paper we have posted on our website. Park users are encouraged to send ideas, hopes and concerns to feedback@sfnpc.org or by calling the NPC office at 415-621-3260.
