Friends of Upper Noe Valley Recreation Center sponsors events such as bimonthly meetings, volunteer work days and free public programs. The center also hosts other free events that are open to the public and geared toward the general community.

Turn weeds into plants each month with the Ladybug Gardeners. Please bring gloves and a trowel. Lead Ladybug Joan Lionberger has gloves, projects and things to see for the kids, too.

Word Week
The finale on Mar. 17 is A Taste of Paris: Words, Wine and Crime. Join the party for Cara Black’s new novel at Le Zinc French Bistro from 4-5:30pm. Eat hors d’oeuvres, drink wine and chat with Cara about Paris and writing. Oh and you also get a signed hardcover copy of MURDER AT THE LANTERNE ROUGE. Reservations required and seating is limited. Monday, Mar. 12 is Nonfiction Night, organized by Judy Levy-Sender, who produces the Odd Monday longterm cultural series in Noe Valley. For Nonfiction Night Judy’s author line up includes Bill Yenne, Ginny Pizzardi, Mike Miller, Sydney Gurewitz Clemens and Robert Warren Cromey. NF Night is at Phoenix Books on 24th St., 7-8:30pm. Books will be available for sale and signing.
Tuesday, Mar. 13, 7-8:30pm Laura Flynn Siler, Michael Aleynikov, Carolyn Cooke and Chris Cole tell How I Got My First Book Published. Siler, Aleynikov and Cooke all have recent books. Cole’s first novel is in the hands of his agent and several New York publishers. Each will read from their first book and tell the saga of getting it published. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Come to St. Philip the Apostle Church on Diamond between 24th and Elizabeth Sts.
Omnivore Books on Food, 3885 Cesar Chavez, will present three delicious events:
Sun., Mar. 11, 3-4pm it’s Marshmellow Madness: Puffalicious Recipes by Shauna Sever.
Mon., Mar. 12, 6-7pm, learn how to cook vegan with flair from Chloe’s Kitchen.
Wed., Mar. 14, also 6-7pm, take Notes From a Maine Kitchen. It aint just lobster, baby.
Thu., Mar. 15 from 6:30-8:30pm Phoenix Books will celebrate its birthday with a great literary event, music and food. New writers from MFA programs around the Bay Area will read from their work, McCabe and Mrs. Miller will play the music and you will eat the food. Phoenix Books is on 24th St. between Noe and Sanchez.
Fri., Mar. 16. Students at three local schools—Alvarado Elementary, James Lick Middle and St. Philip the Apostle—have been competing in a writing contest at their school. From 4-5 pm at the Noe Valley Library the winners will read from their work and receive their prizes.
